The band couldn't hit near all of it, but a cool 18 songs made the cut, including a Merle Haggard cover melodied in. With over a dozen studio albums out in the world, there was a lot of material for M.C. Her beautiful and glistening style of folk echoed off the walls of Saturn to add a little shimmer to a sea of darkness. She'll be joining the group on all of their upcoming dates around America. Singer/songwriter Alexa rose opened the show. This is a group of musicians who know their craft and have perfected it.Īlexa Rose at Saturn | Dylan Basden Photography Tight and crisp drums kept a solid beat throughout, rollicking keys kept a sparkle in the mix, and some just plain beautiful guitar work stole the show. I honestly cannot praise the rest of the band enough. Taylor makes sure his brand of singer/songwriter is not lost in the mix, with his voice and his words ringing true throughout the show. Taking the forefront of Hiss Golden Messenger's music is the writing, a segment that can often be lost in live shows, but not here. M.C.'s raspy-smooth voice overtop the lush instrumentals made for an awesome listening experience. The live performance they've crafted is stellar. ![]() The band didn't miss a note, they came prepared, and they put on an amazing show. It is easy to see that Taylor and his fellow musicians know what they're doing. Hiss Golden Messenger also played a show local to Auburn in nearby Waverly, AL on that tour. They last played in Birmingham in Fall of 2019 at Saturn. Hiss Golden Messenger at Saturn | Dylan Basden Photography (O’Donovan seems to have a particular fondness for that album she has posted a solo performance of the album in its entirety that she recorded during the pandemic on Bandcamp, and Saturday she dangled a promise of a solo tour doing the same.Hiss Golden Messenger soars back into Saturn for a night of joy and wonder. Her guitar work, echoing and atmospheric on “Sister Starling,” stinging on “Hornets,” was a particular highlight, and on a cover of a song from Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska,” “Open All Night,” her fiddle transformed the song’s smolder into ferocious country stomp. On those songs and elsewhere, band member Isa Burke was a triple-threat on vocal, guitar, and fiddle, showing herself to be the band’s not-so-secret weapon. The coolly syncopated “Elevators” was more electric, and “Lucky Star” had a tougher sound as well, while “Phoenix” had a gentle, folky cast. Many of those songs showed differently live than they do in their recorded versions, ornamented as they are there by strings and reeds, yet the result wasn’t detraction but difference. Up first, O’Donovan opened with an older song, “Detour Sign,” but pivoted in short order to material from the album she released in January of this year, “Age of Apathy,” which made up the bulk of her hourlong set.
